Reports have hit the internet that Tom Hanks is in negotiations for a starring role in the upcoming Disney live action remake of Pinocchio.

The original 1940 animated classic sees wood carver Geppetto create a wooden puppet named Pinocchio. The Blue Fairy brings Pinocchio to life, and will turn him into a real boy if he is honest, kind and courageous. The film follows Pinocchio’s adventures, accompanied by his friend and conscience Jiminy Cricket.

Robert Zemeckis is set to direct the live action version, with Hanks in early talks to star as Geppetto. Hanks and Zemeckis have previously worked together on Forrest Gump, Cast Away and animated movie The Polar Express.

This is another in a series of live action Disney remakes, following on from the likes of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. The live action Mulan film will hit Disney Plus this September 4th after the coronavirus pandemic caused Disney to pull its theatrical release.

There are also live action versions of Hercules, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan and more in the works at Disney.

Hanks recently starred in Apple TV Plus’s Greyhound, and is currently filming an Elvis Presley movie in Australia. Unfortunately, production had to be paused after Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson contracted COVID-19 – but work on the film is set to resume this fall, and Hanks and Wilson have recovered from the virus.
