HBO Max is working hard to develop its original content slate, with one of its upcoming offerings set to star comedian Amy Schumer.
The documentary, which has the working title Expecting Amy, will give viewers a look behind the scenes of Schumer’s pregnancy while she was on tour for a stand-up special.
It will run from the day Schumer discovered her pregnancy all the way through to her childbirth, with scenes in between documenting her time on the road and navigating a hectic schedule full of travel while expecting a baby.
Schumer hinted at the creation of the documentary in August 2019, when she posted a picture of herself and her baby on Instagram with the caption ‘Would anyone be interested in seeing a docu series of my pregnancy and birth?’ The post received over 600,000 likes.
The comedian and her husband, Chris Fischer, had their son in May 2019. Baby Gene Atell Fischer was born after a pregnancy which was publicly difficult, with Schumer discussing the complications in Netflix comedy special Growing.
Many social media posts also documented the difficulties, including one which revealed she had made the choice to cancel the end of her comedy tour.
Head of original content for HBO Max Sarah Aubrey said: ‘Amy Schumer is an inspiration and this project is such an honest look at her experience being on the road while preparing for her special. Her willingness to showcase her immense vulnerability, during the most challenging time in her life, is both empowering and hilarious.’
Schumer said: ‘Women are warriors, every one of us. And I hope sharing my story brings more awareness to the challenges of pregnancy and childbirth.’
