According to Discussing Film, Disney/Fox are in talks to develop spinoffs for the Ice Age and Rio franchises.
The production company responsible for the franchises, Blue Sky Studios, developed all of the films in the Ice Age and Rio sagas in the past. Other films they are known for include The Peanuts Movie, Robots and Spies In Disguise – a feature starring Will Smith which is set to be released in December 2019.
Sources have told Discussing Film that the Rio spinoff will be based around the characters Nico and Pedro, while the Ice Age one will star Buck.
Nico and Pedro are voiced by Jamie Foxx and will.i.am, and both the birds appeared in the two Rio films as best friends. They were two of the main protagonists in the storylines. Meanwhile, Buck is a weasel played by Simon Pegg who appeared in Ice Age: Dawn of The Dinosaurs, Ice Age: Continental Drift and Ice Age: Collision Course. It is yet to be confirmed whether the actors will reprise their roles as these characters.
Walt Disney Studios’ marketing department has heavily promoted the upcoming release Spies In Disguise, indicating a strong working relationship and a promising future with the creation and production of new joint animated features.
Disney+ will be home to animated projects from Marvel Studios, LucasFilm and Pixar. Upcoming titles include Lamp Life, Monsters at Work, What If…? and Forky Asks A Question.
