Netflix has recently gained competition in the streaming wars, namely from new services launched by Apple and Disney. As a result, they are releasing a large amount of new original content and picking up series overseas to expand their global appeal.
The downside of this strategy is that some series are being cancelled, and fans are none too happy about the latest show shutdown.
Anne with an E is one of the latest Netflix originals to get the axe, and the news has resulted in fury on social media.
The show premiered in summer 2018, and is based on the 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables. The original story chronicles the life of an orphan named Anne who moves into Green Gables with her new guardians.
When Netflix announced that the upcoming third season would be its last, the Anne fandom took to Twitter and started the hashtag #RenewAnneWithAnE, which was soon trending on the platform.
However, this isn’t the first series to be cut short by the streaming giant. Others which have received the chop include The Get Down, Santa Clarita Diet, One Day at a Time and The OA.
