After several popular seasons, Netflix has announced that The Crown will end after its fifth series. Imelda Staunton will play the Queen in the final season.
Olivia Colman plays the part of the monarch in the third and fourth seasons, so Staunton will take over afterwards.
Originally it was believed that The Crown would last for six series and span over six decades. Peter Morgan, creator of the show, has said that it will end in the 21st century – after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
He said: ‘I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty The Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st century.
‘Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.’
Netflix recently revealed that 73 million households across the globe have watched the show since its launch in 2016. That said, it was not on the UK top 10 list for the platform’s most popular shows of 2019.
Season four is currently in production. Diana, Princess of Wales, and Margaret Thatcher will be introduced, played by Emma Corrin and Gillian Anderson respectively.
