Industry insiders have indicated there is a possibility the launch of NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock could be impacted if the Olympics are cancelled due to coronavirus.
Currently, International Olympics Committee spokesman Mark Adams has said that ‘The Games are going ahead, we’re confident they will go ahead, and we’re confident they will start on the 24th of July’.
However, the spread of COVID-19 has grown exponentially in recent weeks across the globe.
The Olympics has only been called off in 1916, 1940 and 1944, with world wars as the causes in the past.
Comcast has said they are covered financially if the Olympics does not go ahead. However, CEO Brian Roberts has said if the event isn’t available for the platform to stream, it would mean there ‘wouldn’t be a profit this year’.
This is likely due to the fact the company would lose sales of advertising time against the Games. NBC Sports recently revealed it had booked $1.25 billion in ad time for the event – which is a new record.
