YouTube has limited streaming in European countries to standard-definition video as a response to the coronavirus crisis.
The company said in a statement: ‘We are making a commitment to temporarily switch all traffic in the EU to standard definition by default.
‘While we have seen only a few usage peaks, we have measures in place to automatically adjust our system to use less network capacity.’
The move comes after Netflix announced plans to temporarily cut video bit rates for the next 30 days in Europe.
This measure will reduce traffic for the company on networks in this area by an estimated 25 per cent.
