As the coronavirus pandemic continues to cause widespread disruption across the entertainment industry, one film seemed to be standing firm in its summer release slot even as blockbusters like No Time to Die, Black Widow and Wonder Woman 1984 shifted their releases to later this year.
Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was originally due for release on July 17th. Due to the pandemic, Warner Bros. have postponed the film three times. The studio initially delayed the film until July 31st, then pushed it back again, this time until August 12th. However, yesterday (July 20th), Warner Bros. delayed Tenet indefinitely. A staunch supporter of the theatrical experience, Nolan was reportedly keen for Tenet to be the first big release to re-open theaters, but it looks like that won’t be a possibility.
Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich released a statement: “We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature. Our goals throughout this process have been to ensure the highest odds of success for our films while also being ready to support our theater partners with new content as soon as they could safely reopen.”
There’s a chance the film could open internationally before releasing in the US, although nothing is known for certain yet. A new release date is anticipated soon, but for now we’ll have to wait to see when Nolan’s next epic can hit the big screen.
