After White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany claimed PAW Patrol had been cancelled due to ‘cancel culture’, the series assured fans that this wasn’t true.
McEnany said last Friday (July 24th): ‘We saw a few weeks ago that PAW Patrol, a cartoon show about cops, was cancelled. The show Cops was cancelled, Live PD was cancelled’.
‘Cancel culture’ refers to a mostly online phenomenon where something deemed offensive is met with backlash, which can result in the cancellation of events or entertainment content.
While it’s accurate that Cops and Live PD have both been cancelled, both TV shows have faced controversies that likely contributed to their cancellations – in addition to the death of George Floyd in police custody and the subsequent protests. An investigation into Cops by podcast Running From COPS revealed that the programme did not give an accurate representation of police in the US, and some of the suspects who featured in the show had not consented to appear. Live PD was cancelled after it surfaced that a 2019 incident between a Black man and police, which resulted in the man’s death, had been filmed and the footage destroyed.
The official PAW Patrol Twitter account confirmed the same day as McEnany made the claim that the show has not been cancelled.
