HBO Max has announced that it has picked up the streaming rights to Rick and Morty and South Park.
The streaming service, which is launching in May 2020, has been gathering and creating content for the platform in recent months, with these two latest acquisitions a sign that it has big ambitions as a competitor in the sphere.
The first three seasons of Rick and Morty, which comes from Adult Swim, will be available on HBO Max from the date of its launch. Seasons which come in the future will first be released on Adult Swim before streaming on HBO Max. There will be plenty of content coming up, as 70 more episodes have been ordered. Furthermore, Hulu subscribers will still be able to access the show on its platform.
Meanwhile, all 23 seasons of South Park, which comes from Comedy Central, will be on HBO Max from June 2020. There will also be three new seasons, set to make their debut on the new streaming service a day after airing on Comedy Central.
The move is clearly an effort from HBO Max to become a destination for young adults. This is because Rick and Morty was the top comedy in 2017 among millennials, and South Park has spent the last six years in the position of top primetime cable comedy.
