In the wake of the huge announcement that director Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League will be arriving to HBO Max sometime in 2021, many fans began speculating about David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.
While Ayer originally maintained that the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad was his version of the film, he’s since commented that the film was greatly changed in the editing process for the theatrical release. Ayer has revealed that, in his cut, Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn have more screen time together, Karen Fukuhara’s Katana has a fight sequence against the Suicide Squad, and Cara Delevingne’s June Moon opens the movie with an extended sequence that culminates in her possession by villain Enchantress.
Fans were crucial in securing the release of the ‘Snyder Cut’ through the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign on social media. Now, a similar campaign has been launched for the Ayer Cut, with today (July 20th) designated #ReleaseTheAyerCut day by fans online.
Time will tell if this campaign will be as successful as #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. But with AT&T teasing fans on Twitter, and Ayer himself regularly answering fan questions and revealing details about his cut, it certainly seems a real possibility. If the Ayer Cut is released, it will likely join the Snyder Cut as an HBO Max exclusive.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad – reportedly a soft reboot – also releases in theaters next year, so 2021 could potentially be a big year for the Suicide Squad franchise.
