After Johnny Depp was advised by Warner Bros to step down from his role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts, there was much speculation about who would be replacing him.
Now Variety has confirmed that Mads Mikkelsen is in early talks to play the wizarding part – and fans of the actor will most likely remember him from titles such as Hannibal and Doctor Strange.
Depp revealed on Friday that he had been asked to resign following his loss in a UK libel trial concerning allegations of abuse from his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Many will consider that Mikkelsen is a good fit for the role, as he is known for playing intelligent villains. As for Grindelwald, fans will recall that the dark wizard was involved in a complex love affair with Albus Dumbledore.
Other stars in the Fantastic Beasts franchise include Jude Law, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, Alison Sudol, Katherine Waterston and Eddie Redmayne. The third instalment of Fantastic Beasts is currently scheduled for July 15, 2022.
