Upcoming streaming service Peacock, coming from media company NBCUniversal, has several original titles planned or in development. One of the most hotly anticipated is a reboot of Saved By The Bell, and it has now been confirmed that the lead role has been cast.
Josie Totah will be playing Lexi – the most popular girl at Bayside High – according to The Hollywood Reporter. The actor rose to fame on Champions, a show produced by Mindy Kaling. She came out as transgender in an essay written for Time magazine in 2018.
When coming out, she wrote: ‘I was afraid I wouldn’t be accepted, that I would be embarrassed….but I realized…that hiding my true self is not healthy. I’m finally ready to take this step toward becoming myself. I’m ready to be free.’
The original Saved by the Bell aired between 1989 and 1993 on NBC, over four seasons. The show chronicled the lives of a group of friends at Bayside High School, and those who saw the first version will be pleased to know that two members of the original will be joining the reboot.
Elizabeth Berkley will be reprising her role as Jessie Spano, while Mario Lopez will return as A.C.Slater. The new show will stream on Peacock, with a release date not yet announced.
