Anime fans will know all about the classic One Piece series, and now the storyline is being transformed into a live action series for Netflix.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has given the green light to a series comprising ten episodes that will be a partnership between the streaming platform and Tomorrow Studios.
This studio is also producing a live action edition of Cowboy Bebop for the service. However, many will know One Piece as one of the most popular manga titles across the world.
According to THR, One Piece ‘follows the adventures of a young man named Monkey D. Luffy. Inspired by his childhood idol, a powerful pirate named ‘Red Haired’ Shanks, he goes on a quest to find the fabled One Piece treasure and declare himself king of the pirates.’
Of course, fans will know the complexities of the plot, featuring a plethora of characters, a mission spanning the globe and a whole host of villains to contend with.
First produced in 1997, the manga has sold over 460 million copies across the globe, so no doubt Netflix hopes to tap into this fanbase with the live action series.
One Piece is being adapted by Steven Maeda and Matt Owens, known for their work on The X-Files and Luke Cage respectively. The pair will executive produce alongside Marty Adelstein and creator Eiichiro Oda.
