Netflix has beaten out every other movie distributor by receiving 24 Oscar nominations for the upcoming season. The Academy Awards take place on February 9, and the streamer is in with a chance of taking home a lot of awards.
The Irishman received nominations for best director for Martin Scorsese, plus supporting actor for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Marriage Story received lead acting nominations for Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver.
Other nominations of note include Klaus and I Lost My Body, which were announced in the best animated feature category. Meanwhile, The Two Popes landed a huge three nominations.
Netflix will battle it out for the top awards with Warner Bros, Columbia Pictures and Universal Pictures to name but a few. Joker from Warner Bros received the most nominations, with 11 in total.
Similarly, Columbia movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood received 10, as did Universal’s 1917. That said, Netflix received 10 for The Irishman, showing that the world of streaming can compete in the traditional movie landscape.
