NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service Peacock has begun planning its original content, with one of these titles set to be a reboot of Punky Brewster. Now, Freddie Prinze Jr has been announced as a new cast member.
Prinze Jr has been signed up to play the role of Punky’s ex-husband Travis. The part will be a regular one, as although Travis is a working musician who is constantly travelling, he is still a dedicated father – and chemistry remains between himself and Punky.
The reboot will be a continuation of the story which saw a young girl raised by a foster dad after being abandoned by her parents. In the revival, Punky is a single mum of three who is trying to sort her life out. Along the way, she meets a young girl who reminds her of her own past.
Soleil Moon Frye is returning to star in the reboot, while Cherie Johnson will also be reprising her role as Punky’s best friend.
Steve and Jim Armogida are writers and executive producers on the show, while Frye is also an EP along with David Duclon, who was the original creator of the series, and Jimmy Fox.
