Car enthusiast Richard Hammond is best known for his time on Top Gear and Amazon Prime Video series The Grand Tour, but now he is pivoting for a stint on an entirely new kind of show.
The show, which is currently untitled, sees Hammond shipwrecked on a desert island and challenged to go beyond the basic survival narrative by creating a ‘paradise island’.
Instead of his usual on-screen companions James May and Jeremy Clarkson, Hammond will instead be accompanied by Tory Belleci.
The pair will combine their knowledge and expertise in science and engineering to use what they have from the shipwreck and resources from the island to create tools for survival, such as vehicles and a waterwheel.
Hammond said: ‘Somebody needs to take hold of Popular Science as a genre and reinvent it for a new age. And there are only two people to do that job. Unfortunately neither of them are available so it’s me and Tory Belleci.
‘Working with Amazon, who have demonstrated their faith in us by commissioning this hugely ambitious show, we shall create something genuinely fresh and new on a scale of greatness never before seen. There’s every chance that both Tory and I shall make it back from the island alive and sane…Probably.’
Amazon Originals director Georgia Brown said: ‘This show is all about going to the extremes to pull off the impossible and with this outstanding duo at the helm, I can’t wait to see what lengths they will go to.’
The show will air in 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.
