One of the most critically acclaimed and popular series in the streaming industry is How to Get Away with Murder. The show combines the legal and thriller genres and sees a law professor become mixed up in a murder plot alongside five students in her class. The show stars Viola Davis as Annalise Keating, and she received a Primetime Emmy Award – making history as the first black woman to receive the accolade for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
There are six seasons of this show, which comprise 90 episodes in total. The executive producers are Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Bill D’Elia. Meanwhile, Viola Davis also serves as a producer. The production companies are ABC Studios, Shondaland and NoWalk Entertainment, with the average episode running time being 43 minutes. There is a highly immersive plot to be found in each season of How to Get Away with Murder. For example, season one sees the introduction of Annalise Keating in her position as a law professor at a university in Philadelphia – as well as a criminal defense attorney who is well-known in her field. Five students who intern at her firm work with her employees, and two connected murders are examined.
Subsequent seasons involve storylines such as Annalise working to defend Caleb and Catherine Hapstall in light of accusations they tortured and murdered their parents, and Wes investigating the decade-old suicide of his mother. There is also a mystery later on when Annalise’s house is burned down and someone is found dead inside.

As is the norm with many pilot episodes for potential TV series, the shooting took place for these scenes in Los Angeles, California. To be precise, filming was located at the University of Southern California.
That said, this was not the only location which hosted How to Get Away with Murder. Others include Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr, Bryn Mawr College and Ursinus College.
Shondaland sold the concept for How to Get Away with Murder to ABC in 2013. Peter Nowalk, known for his role as supervising producer on Grey’s Anatomy, was the one to write the pilot episode script. A year later, ABC took on the pilot to series, and it was announced a few months afterwards that it would be a limited series.
Episodes and reception
The critical feedback for How to Get Away with Murder was decent to begin with, but peaked by its third and fourth seasons before levelling out again. In other words, Rotten Tomatoes rated the first season 85%. By the fourth season, the rating was at 100%, but this went down to 80% by the time the sixth season was airing.
The show was initially aired on Thursdays in the 10pm time slot. Each season has fifteen episodes, and they began airing each September between 2014 and 2019. Impressively, there were over 14 million viewers for the first season, but this had gone down to around 2 million by season six.
