Overview

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or don’t have a television at home), you’ve probably heard of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. A mix of celebrity interviews, interactive games, and entertaining performances, the show has been around since 2003 and is hosted by immensely popular TV personality Ellen DeGeneres.

Over the years, The Ellen DeGeneres Show has grown to become much more than just your average talk show, with fans tuning in across the globe to this day. It’s won numerous awards, including 61 Daytime Emmy Awards and 171 Daytime Emmy Award nominations.

Premise

The premise of The Ellen DeGeneres Show is as simple as it gets. It’s a talk show, so every episode, Ellen invites a special guest or two on for an interview. Oftentimes, the guest is some Hollywood or international celebrity, which attracts the fans of said personality. Other times, Ellen invites viral sensations and influencers to the show – a trend that’s become more apparent in recent years. A lot of the conversation involves the personal lives of the guests, giving the audience a look into the day-to-day happenings of their favorite stars and personalities.

As mentioned earlier, The Ellen DeGeneres Show is more than just a talk show. Instead of a live band, which is the norm for talk shows such as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Ellen DeGeneres Show has a disc jockey playing the music. Ellen is also quite the host, as she’s able to make a joke out of almost anything, giving the audience a guaranteed laugh every time they tune in.

Cast and characters

As it’s a talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show doesn’t really have a set cast, especially as the show doesn’t even have a live band.

Filming locations

Despite being a studio-based talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show has filmed from several locations over the years. Of course, it wouldn’t be easy to notice, and frankly wouldn’t even make a difference if you did, as the studio itself will generally look the same for the average viewer.

The first filming location for The Ellen DeGeneres Show was at NBC Studios, located in Burbank, California. The location was used by the show for around 5 years, from 2003 all the way to 2008. The reason why the producers behind the show moved locations has never been publicly discussed, but in 2008, they did. The second film location would end up being the one used to this day – Studio 1 in Warner Brothers Studios.

Production

The Ellen DeGeneres Show has three different producers for the show, as well as one distributor. The two original producers were A Very Good Production and Telepictures Productions. WAD Productions, the third production company, came in a season after its first airing, in 2004. As you may have already guessed, Warner Bros Television Distribution is behind everything related to this aspect of production. The show is currently aired on NBC.

Episodes and reception

If you think that shows like The Big Bang Theory have too many seasons, this one is on another level. The Ellen DeGeneres Show is on its 17th season at the time of writing. This is a feat that very few shows have been able to achieve. If you plan on binge-watching the entire collection, good luck! Each season comprises around 170 episodes, with the last season having as many as 189, including the specials.

Over the years, the show has had different opening themes to kick off the episode. The first three seasons had “Ellen” by Sharlotte Gibson; seasons 4 through 12 had “Let’s Have a Little Fun” by the same artist. For seasons 13 to the current season (17), however, the artist P!nk was behind the new opening theme of “Today’s the Day”.

When it comes to overall popularity, it’s no surprise that the show has seen a steady decline. Currently, IMDb ranks the show at 3,552nd, a lot lower than its former rankings years ago. The Ellen DeGeneres Show’s audience isn’t really growing anymore, as younger viewers would rather watch other shows. Still, The Ellen DeGeneres Show retains its position as one of the most successful talk shows in the history of television.
