Overview

Those who like The Vampire Diaries will be happy with The Originals, as this show is a spin-off. It falls under the fantasy supernatural drama category and is known for airing on The CW. It first came into existence on air from October 2013, and there are five seasons in total with 92 episodes to binge watch. The overall focus of the series is a vampire and werewolf hybrid called Klaus Mikaelson as he and his family fall into complicated supernatural politics located in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

Premise

The central focus of The Originals is the three Mikaelson siblings, who comprise Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah. As they are the first vampires to have come into existence in history, they are commonly referred to as The Originals. Those who viewed The Vampire Diaries will have seen Klaus struggle with his dual nature in the series, and a further plot point which was revealed detailed that a werewolf called Hayley is pregnant with Klaus’s child.

The series opens with the siblings going back to New Orleans after a long break – in fact, they have not been there since 1919. Hayley is also settled in New Orleans, but Klaus is preoccupied by the fact they must take back their city after he left it to Marcel. What’s more, there is also a war threatening to begin between the witches, werewolves and vampires.

Filming locations

The Originals is filmed primarily in Conyers, Georgia, although some external shots were actually filmed in New Orleans. For example, St Louis Cathedral was used as Davina’s bedroom, and the benches in Jackson Square were also used for some filming. The Hotel Royal is where the party scene is located in the first episode of season one, and Lafayette Cemetery is used for a number of scenes throughout the series.

Production

It was originally announced that there would be a backdoor pilot focusing on The Originals back in 2013. It was revealed that this series would air in April and possibly be picked up for a series over the course of 2013, going into 2014. At the end of April 2013, it was confirmed that The Originals would be receiving a full series order. It was picked up by The CW for its first season, which aired in October 2013. A week later, The CW ordered three more scripts, and the season premiere attracted an average viewership of 2.21 million.

Episodes and reception

There are 22 episodes in the first three seasons of The Originals, and 13 in the final two seasons. The viewership went down season on season, which is typically the case for most TV series. In other words, the viewership when the first episode came out was 2.21 million, but by the time the final episode of season five aired the viewership was around 0.86 million.

The Originals was nominated for a number of awards between 2014 and 2018, managing to win one. The awards ceremonies they were mentioned at include the Emmy Awards, People’s Choice Awards and Teen Choice Awards. They managed to win in 2014 at the People’s Choice Awards for Favourite Actor in a New Series, with Joseph Morgan landing the award.
