It’s safe to say that Baby Yoda captured the hearts of everyone who watched the first season of The Mandalorian on Disney Plus.
With the emergence of memes such as the cute creature sipping tea or playing music while sitting in a ship with the Mandalorian, the character – also called The Child – has become somewhat of a cultural icon.
In the finale of the original series, there is a scene where Baby Yoda is punched while being held captive in a bag. While this made many people gasp in shock, the cost of Baby Yoda was revealed when actor Adam Pally recalled the scene during the Winter Press Tour event for the Television Critics Association.
Pally said: ‘I remember the first take that I did when I punched him. They called ‘Cut!’ and Jon, who was watching on a monitor in his office, he came down from this office and said, ‘I just want to let you know that this is the hero Yoda [the main prop used for close-ups] and it costs, like, $5 million. So while I want you to hit it, I just want you to know that.’
The Baby Yoda puppet was operated by two technicians, with one working the eyes and mouth while another controlled other facial expressions.
The first season of The Mandalorian is currently available on Disney Plus, with a second season in the works.
