Rumours have been circling that Imelda Staunton could be replacing Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown as further seasons are recorded.

Earlier this week, reports revealed that casting had allegedly begun for season 5 and 6 of the wildly popular Netflix series, which tracks the Queen’s long reign over several decades.

However, Netflix have filed a statement with The Hollywood Reporter which has made light of the rumours. According to a spokesperson, Netflix is ‘currently filming season 4 of The Crown but have not commissioned any further seasons as yet, therefore any news on casting remains pure speculation.’

The rumours began when the Daily Mail published a report which had people believing Staunton had been approached by producers and casting directors. Furthermore, it was then speculated that Staunton was in talks to take over portrayal of the Queen from Colman, playing her from her mid-60s.

Season 3 of the series premiered on Netflix on November 17, chronicling the Queen’s reign from 1964 to 1977.
