Last Saturday (August 22nd) saw the DC FanDome virtual convention unveil plenty of exclusive reveals about upcoming DC projects.
One of the biggest releases was the first look at The Batman, set to be released October 21st, 2021. The movie stars Robert Pattinson as Batman, with Matt Reeves both directing and co-writing with Mattson Tomlin.
The first trailer, which is available on YouTube, premiered during The Batman’s FanDome panel – and gave us plenty to analyze.
Alongside our first look at Pattinson as the titular vigilante, we also caught a glimpse of Paul Dano as the Riddler, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and an unrecognisable Collin Farrell as the Penguin. We also heard Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, though didn’t get a look at him.
It was revealed that the film will be set during Batman’s second year as Gotham City’s Caped Crusader, while much of the city is fearful of Batman and unsure if he even exists. Reeves explained that the film isn’t an origin story, but ‘touches upon [Batman’s] origins’ – and sees the movie’s antagonists transform into some of Gotham’s most famous villains. The film will also be separate from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
Plus, we found out that Reeve’s HBO Max Batman series will be a prequel to The Batman and will follow corruption in Gotham’s police force during Batman’s first year in the city.
Production on The Batman was forced to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic earlier in the year, but the movie will likely resume filming in September.
You can check out plenty of DCEU content via a Hulu package that includes HBO Max, which is available to try with a 7 day free trial.
As well as DC movies, you’ll be able to enjoy Hulu’s expansive content library, featuring hits like The Handmaid’s Tale and Palm Springs – and Hulu offer their own separate 30 day free trial.
