Fans of long-running Netflix show Grace and Frankie should brace themselves, as the series will be coming to an end once season 7 is over. However, this will make the show the longest-running original series created by the streaming giant.

Grace and Frankie stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, who play rivals whose perpetual contests suddenly stop after the discovery that their husbands have fallen in love with each other. What’s more, they want to get married. With their respective worlds falling apart around them, the two ladies realise their best bet is to rely on each other.

Tomlin features alongside her previous The West Wing co-star Martin Sheen, who takes on the role of Grace’s husband Robert. Fonda also gets to act alongside a former co-star, as she is reunited with Sam Waterson – from The Newsroom – as he plays Frankie’s husband Sol. Other famous faces in the cast include June Diane Raphael, Baron Vaughn, Brooklyn Decker and Ethan Embry.

The series has been subject to rave reviews, receiving a rating of 8.3/10 on IMDb and 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. It first aired in 2015, and the final season will have 16 episodes. This news comes ahead of the season 6 premiere, which fans can expect to see on their small screens in January 2020.

In a statement to CNN, Fonda and Tomlin said: ‘We are both delighted and heartbroken that Grace and Frankie will be back for its seventh, though final, season.

‘We’re so grateful that our show has been able to deal with issues that have really connected to our grand generation. And their kids, and amazingly, their kids as well.

‘We’ll miss these two old gals, Grace and Frankie, as much as many of their fans will, but we’ll still be around. We’ve outlasted so many things – just hope we don’t outlast the planet.’
