There is an intriguing new documentary coming to Netflix called Circus of Books. The story focuses on the shop located on Santa Monica Blvd.
The original documentary shines a spotlight on the Jewish couple and parents who own the store – which is a gay porn shop.
Circus of Books has been a historical landmark for over 35 years, as it provided the LGBT+ community in Los Angeles with a place to socialise and be themselves.
The store was owned by Karen and Barry Mason, who had three children who had no idea they ran the business, living an ordinary mainstream life and attending religious school.
The documentary is produced by Ryan Murphy and comes from the Mason’s daughter, Rachel. It shows how the pair kept their shop a secret, even during the HIV/AIDS epidemic which saw them lose many employees.
Circus of Books comes out on Netflix on April 22.
