This Christmas period, the two main movies battling it out were Soul and Wonder Woman 1984, and it’s safe to say the latter has made a splash at the box office.
The movie was the first from Warner Bros to make its debut on its streaming service, HBO Max, and recent figures indicate that half of all subscribers tuned in.
In North American theaters, the movie gathered $16.7 million from 2,100 theaters – around half of what it would usually receive, but still a respectable number considering coronavirus measures.
In comparison, the Wonder Woman movie which came out in 2017 managed to gross over $100 million from 4,100 theaters within its first weekend.
For context, only around 35% of US cinemas are open at present, and those which are will be operating with a limited capacity.
Those residing in big cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco will have noticed that cinemas are closed due to COVID-19.
