The channel’s name used to be an abbreviation of ‘womens’ entertainment’, but this meaning has changed since a rebranding back in 2014 due to a desire to be more inclusive of both males and females.

This channel is owned by AMC Networks, which also oversees sister channels IFC, Sundance TV, AMC and BBC America. There are roughly 73% of households in the US with access to this channel, according to 2015 data. Originally, the channel was called Romance Classics when it first launched back in September 1997. It used to be owned by Rainbow Media, and its primary focus was romantic dramas and comedies – plus TV miniseries.
