Overview
Comedy Central is a TV channel with ViacomCBS at the helm as the parent company. This channel primarily focuses on comedy-based content, ranging from original shows to stand-up specials. Launched on April 1, 1991, Comedy Central has a wide global presence and is offered across continents including Europe, Asia, and Australia, as well as in the US where it originates.
Comedy Central arose from a merger between HBO’s The Comedy Channel and Viacom’s Ha! While it struggled initially, Comedy Central made a breakthrough with its original content, most notably the animated comedy sensation South Park. Given South Park’s explicit nature, networks at the time were hesitant to pick it up for their channels. Comedy Central was the only one to pick it up, which resulted in its viewership numbers soaring. As a result, more creators were attracted to the channel, as they could see they would be allowed more creative freedom. Comedy Central, therefore, became geared towards mature audiences. That said, it eventually introduced content that was suitable for PG-13 audiences.
Channel Guide
Comedy Central caters to mature audiences and features shows such as South Park, Chappelle’s Show, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and a number of stand up specials. Comedy Central has provided up and coming stand-up comics the opportunity to showcase their talent to a wider audience. Subsequently, Comedy Central was instrumental in launching a number of new careers.
This channel is offered in Full HD resolution (1080i HDTV). However, it doesn’t have a 4K offering, unlike other channels today. Depending on the country that it operates in, Comedy Central also offers specific, local content.
