Overview

The Discovery Channel is an American pay television network known across the United States and abroad for its reality television, documentaries, and pseudo-science entertainment shows. Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, it was launched on June 17th, 1985 by John Hendricks through its parent company, Cable Educational Inc. Over the years, it has established itself as the go-to network channel for feature documentaries and reality television.

In 2015, Discovery launched a streaming service, Discovery Go, to meet the demand for video-on-demand services. Through mobile apps, tablets, or other digital devices, customers could now access more content from the channel. Through Discovery Go, customers could also view content from Discovery’s sister networks. Other pay television channels owned by Discovery Inc include Animal Planet, Destination America, Discovery Family and more.

Channel Guide

This channel focuses more on reality television series and specials such as criminal, investigative and automotive series. Discovery also covers more educational documentaries, targeted at families and a younger audience. It still features cultural and wildlife documentaries, historical and science specials which were the initial concept for the channel in the 1980s and 1990s.

Thanks to its TV Everywhere service, viewing the television channel is easy and can be done at any time. Its offering of cultural and wildlife documentaries has increased its popularity on an international scale. Discovery reaches more than 170 countries in over 33 languages. The shows are offered in different language soundtracks and subtitles. Its focus on reality television shows has attracted a wide demographic range. With its current set of shows, the historical and investigative shows are geared more towards the older generations while the reality and pseudo-scientific entertainment titles draw in the younger ones.
