Overview
Galavision is an American TV channel which broadcasts Spanish language content. It is owned by Univision Communications Inc. and is not related to the now-defunct Mexican channel with the same name, although both channels are associated with Televisa programming. Galavision was first launched in April 1979.
Galavision’s headquarters are in Miami and the channel specializes in news, sport and entertainment. The channel is received by over 53 million US TV households, 8.5 million of which identify as Hispanic-Americans.
The channel currently airs mostly shows from the three main Televisa networks: Las Estrellas, Gala TV and FOROtv.
Channel Guide
Galavision shows a variety of Spanish language content. This includes telenovelas, comedy and late-night shows from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, along with current hit shows from the Televisa networks and sister network UniMas. Some of its most popular shows include Vida Total, Acceso Maximo, Delicioso and En Casa Con Lucy.
There is no original news content on Galavision, and the channel instead airs news programs from Canal de las Estrellas, FOROtv and Gala TV. The channel’s main sports focus is soccer and it shows a number of games from Mexico’s Liga MX.
52 million people in the US are of Hispanic descent, which accounts for close to 17% of the country’s total population. In addition, there are a further 12 million people in the US who also speak Spanish. However, Galavision only averages around 250,000 viewers at peak times (7 PM – 11 PM every day). Of these viewers, almost 66% are in the 18 to 49 age range. To break this down further, 40% of viewers are aged between 18 and 34, the channel’s most popular demographic. It is more or less 50% men and 50% women who watch the channel, with some variations depending on individual programs.
The highest ratings ever recorded by Galavision – and the fourth-highest for a Spanish language TV network – was for a football match between Mexico and Colombia in 2011. 2.3 million people tuned in to watch at least part of the game.
