Overview

HGTV (Home & Garden Television) is an American television channel owned by Discovery, Inc. and based in Knoxville, Tennessee. It’s the third most-watched channel in the US and specialises in broadcasting reality programs related to home improvement and real estate.

The founders of HGTV, Kenneth W. Lowe and Susan Packard, developed the network’s concept in 1992. With a small amount of financial support from a company called E.W.Scripps, Mr. Lowe bought Cinetel, a small production company in Knoxville that was to be the base for HGTV.

The original name of the channel was Home, Lawn, and Garden Channel. They rebranded in 2010 by changing the logo and shortening the name. As a network, HGTV is available on an international level, streaming its programs in North and South America, the Middle East, North Africa and most of Europe.

Channel Guide

HGTV’s program offering has largely remained the same since its launch. In other words, the main topics covered are renovation, home improvement, home buying, landscaping, gardening, decorating and various other hobbies. Around 90% of HGTV’s programming is originally produced, and the network has invested nearly $400 million in creating original content. The other part of the programming schedule is dedicated to reruns from Canadian channels, PBS and a few other networks. Some of the most popular shows on HGTV are Property Brothers, House Hunters, My Lottery Dream Home and so on.

Approximately 96 million US households watch HGTV. The channel’s target audience ranges from 18 to 63 years old. In later years, Millennials (23 to 38 years old) and Gen Z (7 to 22 years old) showed a bigger interest in watching HGTV shows.
