Yesterday (August 16th) saw the release of HBO’s latest big budget drama series, Lovecraft Country.

Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, the TV series sees Atticus ‘Tic’ Freeman (Jonathan Majors) searching for his father through the Jim Crow-era Midwest. He’s joined by his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and childhood friend Letitia ‘Leti’ Lewis (Jurnee Smollett). Along the way, they confront both horrific racism and Lovecraftian terrors. The series is executive produced by Jordan Peele, Ben Stephenson, Misha Green and JJ Abrams, with Green also showrunning.

Critics are already highly praising the series, particularly the lead performances. Many are favorably discussing the show’s interrogation of race and horror, and how they intersect – especially considering H.P. Lovecraft’s own racism. The series is also drawing comparisons to HBO’s acclaimed hit Watchmen for its anti-racist themes.

Lovecraft Country airs at 9pm ET on HBO every Sunday, and will consist of 10 episodes.

You can stream the first episode of Lovecraft Country now on HBO Max with a 7 day free trial. You can also check out a Hulu plan that includes HBO Max to stream the series, which will give you access to HBO shows like Watchmen and Euphoria as well.

There’s also a bundle deal with Disney Plus and ESPN Plus to take advantage of for an even bigger all round entertainment package, with thousands of hours of hit movies and TV shows to enjoy – as well as live sports.
