Disney’s live action adaptation of Mulan has been repeatedly delayed since its original March 2020 release date. Eventually indefinitely delayed on July 23rd, Disney yesterday (August 4th) announced that the film will head straight to Disney Plus.
Mulan will reportedly stream on Disney Plus everywhere the streamer is available, and theatrically in markets without it. However, viewers will have to pay an extra fee to watch the movie – so far, it’s been confirmed the US price will be $29.99. International prices are yet to be announced.
The news is said to have come as a surprise to UK exhibitors – in the UK, roughly 40% of theaters are open for business. The picture is very different in the US, however, where a high number of COVID-19 cases currently prevents theaters from safely reopening. AMC Theatres plans to reopen sometime this August.
Speculation is now mounting over whether Black Widow will also skip a theatrical release and head straight to Disney Plus. While Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the Mulan decision is ‘a one-off’, he added that ‘we’ll have a chance to learn from this’ – potentially suggesting more movies could make the jump straight to streaming. However, at present The New Mutants is sticking to its August 28th release date, and Black Widow is still currently slated for theatrical release this November 6th.
It now seems almost certain that the first blockbuster to welcome audiences back to theaters will be director Christopher Nolan’s Tenet – albeit with a staggered release, with international audiences getting the film first on August 26th, ahead of the US’s September 3rd date.
Mulan will be available this September 4th on Disney Plus for $29.99. To watch, you’ll need a Disney Plus subscription – which will also give you access to Disney’s massive entertainment library, including the MCU, Star Wars saga and more. With a Disney Plus subscription, you’ll be able to stream movies from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Avengers: Endgame – as well as upcoming Marvel original TV shows like Loki and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Why not try Disney Plus today?
