Walt Disney Animation Studios returns with Raya and the Last Dragon next year, which features the studio’s first Southeast Asian princess.

First announced at D23 in 2018, Raya and the Last Dragon was initially set to be released November 25th of this year. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the film has been delayed till March 12th 2021 – with Pixar’s Soul now releasing in the November slot.

The film is directed by Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins (Wellins also directed The Princess and the Frog), with John Ripa co-directing. Kiel Murray and Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim wrote the movie.

Raya and the Last Dragon takes place in the fictional land of Kumandra. In Kumandra, dragons are rare, but greatly loved by the people. As the title suggests, Raya sets out on a quest to find the last dragon. For inspiration, the filmmakers travelled to Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand and Lao.

Cassie Steele voices Raya, with Awkwafina voicing Sisu – a water dragon capable of turning into a human being.

Raya and the Last Dragon will be Disney’s first original animated film since 2016’s Moana (last year’s Frozen 2 was a sequel). It will not be a musical.

There’s no trailer yet, but there is a poster.
