Tina Fey, the creator of 30 Rock, asked NBCUniversal to remove four episodes of 30 Rock from streaming and TV. This means these episodes will no longer be on any streaming service, including Hulu.

The episodes all feature blackface – a practice with a racist history where a white person wears makeup to look like a black person.

The removed episodes are:

  • Season 3 Episode 2: ‘Believe in the Stars’
  • Season 5, Episode 4: ‘Live Show’ (East Coast version)
  • Season 5, Episode 10: ‘Christmas Attack Zone’
  • Season 6, Episode 19: ‘Live from Studio 6H’

Though ‘Live from Studio 6H’ is intended to be a comment on racism in the entertainment industry, Fey said in a statement that: ‘As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation. I understand now that ‘intent’ is not a free pass for white people to use these images.

‘I apologize for pain they have caused. Going forward, no comedy-loving kid needs to stumble on these tropes and be stung by their ugliness. I thank NBCUniversal for honoring this request.’

The 30 Rock reunion special, featuring the original cast, will air July 16th at 8pm ET. However, much of the country may not be able to watch ’30 Rock: A One-Time Special’ as many station owners will not broadcast it – judging it a promotion of NBCUniversal’s new streaming service Peacock. The reunion will be available on Peacock from July 17th.

You can stream all 7 seasons of 30 Rock on Hulu now with a 30 day free trial.
