Overview

FYI is an American cable TV channel which is owned by A&E Networks. This channel is the result of a 50/50 partnership between Disney Media Networks and Hearst Communications. The channel launched in 1999 and it was originally known as The Biography Channel. It started as a companion channel to A&E, inheriting a lot of its reality content and top programs such as Murder, She Wrote.

The network was initially centered around the A&E program, Biography, which is where the name came from. As a result, all episodes of this show were broadcast on The Biography Channel after it was completely dropped by A&E in 2006. It was rebranded to Bio in 2007 and gained its current name in 2014.

FYI is based in Newark, New Jersey, and it broadcasts to viewers in the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and parts of Southeast Asia. It was previously broadcast to the UK, some countries in Europe, Latin America and Australia. From January 2016, more than 69 million US households have had access to FYI.

Channel Guide

FYI’s main focus is lifestyle, but there has been an increase in reality shows and documentaries in recent years. A lot of the channel’s content is based on home improvement, cookery and true crime. The majority of the channel’s programs are original content.

Some of FYI’s top programs include Tiny House Hunting, a show where a realtor helps buyers find a minimalist living situation; Married at First Sight, where couples matched by relationship experts agree to get married when they first meet; and Shipping Wars, a reality TV program centered around independent shipping companies who transport large and unconventional items.

In 2018, FYI was ranked in 92nd place on a list of the most-watched networks on US TV. The channel averaged 121,000 viewers for each of its programs that year, which was a decrease of around 20% compared to the previous year.

Due to some of the more young and fashionable programs available, such as Kocktails with Khloe, the age demographic of FYI has shifted downwards. While it was historically a channel for older viewers, in 2016 there was a sharp upturn in younger viewers – particularly women. There was a 16% increase in women aged between 18 and 49 watching the channel and an 8% increase in total viewers in the same age group.
