With the planned launch of HBO Max has come confusion about what the difference is between the new streaming service, HBO Go and HBO Now. Fortunately, we are here to explain the difference between each of these platforms to help you make a decision about which of them you should spend your money on.
HBO Go is the companion platform you get alongside your regular HBO cable subscription package. If you currently watch HBO on cable, this is the platform which it makes the most sense to download onto your device. You can log in with the details you would use for your cable provider, and be able to get all of the content you would normally get on your TV.
HBO Now is a standalone streaming service which is designed for those who don’t pay for HBO as part of a cable service. HBO Now exists to bring in new customers and provide HBO programming to them.
There are similar lineups in terms of content on both HBO Now and HBO Go, so it doesn’t really matter which one you have.
When HBO Max launches in 2020, it will take the place of both HBO Go and HBO Now. This means there will be one central hub for all of HBO’s best content, and more besides. The streaming service has come about due to the merger between AT&T and Time Warner. This means that the new HBO Max app will not only have the same content as you’d get on the Go and Now apps, but there will be new shows as acquired from the merger, such as Friends and South Park.
Subscribers who get HBO Now through HBO will be able to access HBO Max from its launch without paying anything extra. This will be an improved service, as viewers will gain access to shows and movies from TimeWarner companies such as CNN, Cartoon Network, TNT and TBS.
