The success of Trolls World Tour has been unexpected for many, but that isn’t the main reason this movie has proven controversial.
After becoming the first blockbuster title to come out without a theatrical release due to the coronavirus pandemic, AMC Theaters have taken offence.
The movie became available on Amazon Prime Video as a PVOD (Premium Video On Demand) release, and it broke digital records as it grossed nearly $100 million in the US and Canada after being rented 5 million times.
Jeff Shell, CEO of NBCUniversal, then said that the success had ‘demonstrated the viability of PVOD’ and once theatres reopened, movies would be released in both formats.
Unfortunately, this led to AMC Theatres stating they would no longer show Universal movies in their 1000 branches across the globe.
The company believes that Universal will no longer observe the theatrical window for their releases, which is 90 days in duration.
