NBCUniversal launched their new streaming site, Peacock, earlier this month. Already packed with classic content like 30 Rock as well as originals like Brave New World, the streaming service may be getting even more hit movies and TV shows courtesy of HBO Max.
Although HBO Max has been live for just two months, it’s already losing some of its key content. All eight Harry Potter movies, as well as John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Magic Mike, Good Will Hunting and more, will be leaving the service in August 2020.
However, the Harry Potter movies could be finding a new home on Peacock. This is due to a deal between WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal, which gave NBCUniversal the exclusive rights to the Harry Potter movies until 2025. WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal reached another deal just before HBO Max launched, allowing the Harry Potter series to be added to HBO Max for its release.
HBO Max is home to plenty of Warner Bros. content, including the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) – although, initially it seemed that Justice League would be leaving after only a month on the service. It was due to come back after its period of absence, but ultimately the movie ended up with an extended time on HBO Max.
Similarly, Peacock will be losing content that is likely a big draw to the service. The Jurassic Park and Matrix trilogies will both be leaving soon, with the Jurassic Park series headed for Netflix in August.
It seems a major feature of the streaming wars will be the cycling of content between streaming services. Time will tell if audiences will be willing to keep up with content shifting between services, especially as most require a paid subscription.
Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video has been working hard behind the scenes to build up its movie and TV library. If you want to watch three times as many movies as you’ll find on Netflix, why not try out a 30 day free trial of Amazon Prime Video today?
