Those of us who use Roku know that its hardware is the perfect way to access our streaming media in one convenient hub – and The Roku Channel is known for providing free content.
However, it appears that the platform is looking to pivot as data provider Revealera has listed a job for a lead production attorney. Notably, the job description states they are looking to have this person build out ‘an expanding slate of original content’.
With other responsibilities set to include working on purchase and service agreements, liaising with guilds and unions and similar such duties, it would appear that quite the investment into bona fide originals is being made.
Roku has carried out a number of interesting moves lately, with one of them being to acquire Quibi’s entire content library following its closure in December 2020. While CEO Anthony Wood said the company had no plans to create original content in 2019, it looks like this could be about to change.
There are set to be a number of programs making their way to The Roku Channel this year which were never released, and it makes sense to guess that, hot on the trail of these originals will be even more new content.
With Roku also working on expanding device compatibility for its platform, making it available on iOS, Android and Amazon Fire TV devices, it appears that the hardware giant is looking to make a major statement in the streaming wars.
