Netflix’s hit drama The Crown is known for changing up its cast every two seasons to reflect the passage of time and the ageing of its principle characters.
In seasons 1 and 2 of the TV series, which dramatizes the story of the modern British royal family, Queen Elizabeth II was played by Claire Foy. Prince Philip, the queen’s husband, was portrayed by Matt Smith. Season 3 and 4 saw Olivia Coleman and Tobias Menzies take over the roles, and yesterday (August 12th), news broke that a new Prince Philip has been cast for seasons 5 and 6.
Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Philip in the next two seasons of the series. He’ll join Imelda Staunton, who will portray Queen Elizabeth II, and Lesley Manville, who will appear as Princess Margaret (taking over from Helena Bonham Carter, who herself replaced Vanessa Kirby).
Season 4 of The Crown premieres on Netflix later this year, and season 5 is not expected until 2022. Fans will be pleased to know the long wait is unrelated to the coronavirus pandemic, and is pre-planned. Filming is set to begin June 2021. Season 6 is currently planned to be The Crown’s final season.
