Yesterday (September 23rd) brought the news that a new DC show is heading to HBO Max.
The TV series will focus on John Cena’s Peacemaker and will be written by James Gunn, who will also direct several episodes. Gunn is the writer/director of The Suicide Squad, the film in which Peacemaker will make his big screen debut.
The series will be 8 episodes long, with the exact plot unknown at this time – though it’s expected to show Peacemaker’s origin.
In a behind the scenes video released at last month’s DC FanDome, Peacemaker was described as a ‘douchey Captain America’. Peacemaker is so dedicated to peace he will even kill to get it.
Production is set to begin in early 2021, ahead of Gunn starting on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film.
James Gunn commented: ‘Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter [Safran, The Suicide Squad producer], and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake’.
Cena himself said: ‘I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this’.
However, some weren’t quite so excited.
Many fans on Twitter expressed their disappointment that Peacemaker is getting a series instead of Jurnee Smollet’s Black Canary, Karen Fukuhara’s Katana, Ben Affleck’s Batman, or Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke.

With Affleck returning to the role of Batman at least twice more (for Justice League reshoots and in upcoming movie The Flash), it’s understandable that some fans may have been hoping for an announcement that he may reprise his role in a more substantial project soon.
Meanwhile, Birds of Prey – which saw Smollet appear as Black Canary – wasn’t a massive box office success, but still proved to be popular with fans and critics alike.

Following on from DC FanDome, it’s clear that there’s lots to be excited about in the future of the DCEU. There’s a wide range of projects in varying tones and targeted to different audiences on the way, and while nothing else has been confirmed yet, the announcement of Affleck’s return in The Flash came as a massive surprise – so fans shouldn’t give up hope yet that their favorites may reappear someday.
For now, you can stream DCEU movies with a Hulu plan that includes HBO Max, which you can try with a 7 day free trial. Hulu also offer their own 30 day free trial to sample their expansive library.
