Last weekend saw many virtual conventions take place, including Comic-Con@Home, the digital replacement for San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). Another of these conventions was the Adult Swim Con. On July 24th, during the How They Do It: Rick and Morty Live panel, Adult Swim premiered a short, unfinished clip of the upcoming season 5 of Rick and Morty.
The series’ co-creator Dan Harmon described the clip as the opening of an episode – but said he couldn’t remember which episode. The clip sees plenty of action, including a giant monster pursuing the titular duo, Morty snagging a date, and Rick’s aquatic ‘nemesis’ emerging from the depths of the ocean in a giant scallop. You can watch the clip on YouTube now.
Harmon also revealed that writing on season 5 is ‘basically done’, with writing work already begun on season 6.
Based on Rick and Morty’s usual timeline after unveiling clips like this one, we can hopefully expect season 5 early next year. This would be good news for fans, especially after the mammoth wait between season 3 and 4. Although Sarah Chalke, voice of Beth, said ‘season five, we haven’t read yet…as it stands, we are going to most likely hold off on recording until things settle down a little bit’, co-creator Justin Roiland described season 5 as ‘mostly in the can’.
There’s no official release date for season 5 yet.
While you wait, you can catch up on Rick and Morty with Hulu’s 30 day free trial.
