When the cord cutting trend began, it meant living with on-demand options: cable and satellite were still pretty much your only legal paths to live TV. The rise of the skinny bundle has changed that, and has sparked a gold rush in a business space that didn’t exist just a few years ago.

The latest skinny bundle on the scene is Playstation Vue. How does it measure up? Here’s our complete Playstation Vue review, including everything you need to know about the channels it offers, the features that set it apart, and the price you’ll pay if you sign up – plus, of course, my advice on whether or not you should!

PlayStation Vue is a streaming platform which facilitates the viewing of movies, news and sports without the need for a cable or satellite service. It can be used with many mobile and TV devices, such as Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Android TV, Apple TV, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, mobile devices and computer web browsers. There is a high volume of storage available with the DVR function, multiple profiles available and On Demand programming, plus premium channels which can either be purchased on their own or with a multi-channel plan. There is no need to own a PlayStation console to sign up for a PlayStation Vue account, and no annual contracts are involved.

Content available on PlayStation Vue

With PlayStation Vue, you can watch live TV, movies, news, sports and on demand programming. If you want to catch up on a show and it displays ‘On Demand’, this means the show could be available to watch for more than three days after its initial air date. If you add a show to My DVR, this will be saved for 28 days from its original airing. With the DVR, you can save unlimited episodes for up to 500 programs.

Certain devices allow you to press the Menu button from anywhere within the app to see a navigation menu. From here, you can navigate to the previous channel, the guide, the DVR or search. When you first launch PlayStation Vue you will be presented with the Home screen. This is a hub for you to browse the various available programs in menu rows. These include the Timeline/Now Playing, which shows what you are currently watching and what’s up next for the selected channel or show. Additionally, the My DVR menu shows programs you have marked as a favorite, and you will be able to access DVR and On Demand programming for these shows. You can toggle the heart icon on and off to add and remove shows in this section, and any show here is automatically saved whenever it airs.

With the Live TV menu, you can view which shows are currently airing, along with trending and popular shows. Furthermore, there is a menu row for channels which you have saved as a favorite, and these can be added and removed using the heart toggle also. If you want to view sports or kids programs which are currently on air, there are menu rows for these categories, and you will be able to view upcoming and On Demand options too.

If you’re looking for a specific program, there are Guide, On Demand and Search Functions. With the On Demand menu, you can browse thousands of shows which are available to watch whenever it’s convenient for you. With the Search function, you can find the most popular results for your keywords at the top of the results screen. With the Guide, you can scroll through the content which is currently airing, and also see which shows will be coming up, plus what you can catch up on.

If you’re a sports fan, there are several specialised features available with PlayStation Vue. With multi-view on the PlayStation 4 console and Apple TV, users can watch up to three or four live programs at once. You can also view live scores for ongoing games with the game’s program title. League pages are included, so you can view upcoming events for leagues such as the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB and Premier League.

PlayStation Vue offers TV Everywhere app and website compatibility with over 60 of their network partners. These can be used at no additional cost, and you will need a subscription to a plan which includes the channel you want to gain access to in order to authenticate your details. Compatible channels include ABC, Adult Swim, Animal Planet, Cartoon Network, CBS, Cooking Channel, Destination America, Food Network, HBC, Science Channel and TLC.
